Support California AJR 33: Embrace the UN Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

California Assembly Joint Resolution 33 (AJR 33) calls on our federal government and our nation to make nuclear disarmament the centerpiece of our national security policy (sounds reasonable!) by embracing the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

AJR 33 will be coming up for a vote soon. Now is the time to act!  Please write a short letter to both your California senator and representative in support of this resolution. (Printed letters are more effective than e-mail, but use e-mail if you prefer. The easiest way to send an email is through this link provided by the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation Action Network. It will connect you to your appropriate state representatives, too.)

This resolution is short and easy to read (click here for full text), and it gives us a rare opportunity to act. It is also easily summarized. It calls on our federal leaders to:

  • Embrace the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons
  • Make nuclear disarmament the centerpiece of our national security policy
  • Renounce first use
  • Take our nuclear weapons off of hair-trigger alert
  • Cancel the plan to replace the entire arsenal with enhanced weapons
  • Actively pursue a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals
Below you will find a sample letter and addresses.

If you are moved to act, please do so soon!

Here are the addresses for some local senator and assemblypersons:

Senator Jerry Hill
State Capitol, Room 5035
Sacramento, CA 95814

Assemblymember Marc Berman
P.O. Box 942849
Sacramento, CA 94249-0024

You can find your California representatives (Senate and Assembly) by going to http://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/ and entering your address.

Sample Letter (Keep it short and to the point!):

Dear XXX,

The recent exchange of nuclear threats between the U.S. and North Korea reminds me of the urgent need to reduce the enormous danger posed by these weapons.  Assembly Joint Resolution No. 33 addresses that issue by urging the federal government to adopt common-sense measures to reduce the risk of nuclear war.

As a person of faith, I urge you to vote "Yes" on AJR 33 when it comes up for a vote.

Sincerely,
YYY
